Our Street Nanaimo

Our Street Nanaimo is a tactical urbanism initiative to improve the built environment in Nanaimo. Our goal is to instigate meaningful and positive change to make our city more enjoyable for all.

Our Projects

Our projects are intended to support local business, create safer streets and improve urban life in Nanaimo.

Walk Downtown Nanaimo

Downtown Nanaimo is beautiful. However, it is fractured by the highway and underutilized realestate. We installed inexpensive wayfinding signs to encourage people to walk as they explore our wonderful downtown core.

Jane's Walk

Jane’s Walk is a movement of free, citizen-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs. Walks take place in hundreds of cities around the world. Nanaimo's first Jane's Walk took place in Nanaimo on May 5, 2018!

Board Games in the Krall Space

Small events can add life to an under-utilized urban space. Diana Krall Plaza in downtown Nanaimo often sits empty. Why not pull out some tables and chairs and play board games with old and new friends?

Tactical Urbanism in Nanaimo Video Series

We are working with Levo Media to create a short video series explaining tactical urbanism in Nanaimo. We will showcase a couple of interesting projects in Nanaimo. Check back shortly for the videos.

Our People

Founded by Tyler Brown, Our Street Nanaimo is an ad hoc and project-based initiative. Each project team forms around a particular objective or aim. If you have a particular project in mind and want to work together then please get in touch!

Our Method

Tactical Urbanism

“Tactical urbanism” is a deliberate approach to city-making that uses short-term action to instigate long-term change. Approaches include pop-up parks, pavement to plazas and better block initiatives.

Jane's Walk Nanaimo

Jane’s Walk is a movement of free, citizen-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs. Walks take place in hundreds of cities around the world.

Nanaimo's first Jane's Walk took place on May 5, 2018, at 2:00 PM. The walk began on the steps of Nanaimo City Hall. Short commentary was provided on key streets and sites.

If you missed this year's walk please join us in May of 2019!

Walk Downtown Nanaimo

Downtown Nanaimo is beautiful. However, it is fractured by the highway and underutilized real estate. We installed fourteen inexpensive wayfinding signs with the goal of encouraging people to walk as they explore our wonderful downtown core.

A secondary goal of the campaign was to demonstrate to the City of Nanaimo that noticeable and useful wayfinding signage is important for both residents and tourists alike to overcome edges and gaps in our downtown.

The official event page, including the location of each sign, can be found here.

Board Games in the Krall Space

Small events can add life to an under-utilized urban space. Diana Krall Plaza in downtown Nanaimo often sits empty. Why not pull out some tables and chairs and play board games with old and new friends?

In a warm evening in July of 2018 we did just that. Stay tuned as we will be hosting another!
